I had my first Turkish coffee at a place called Istanbul Cafe in downtown San Diego and it was simply wonderful. I’ve been hearing how great it is and so I tried a cup myself. Normally, you would have it after your meal but I’m a big fat American, so I had it with my meal. It’s served in a little cup like how you would drink traditional espresso. It’s really, really strong and full of flavor and has a nutty flavor. If you don’t mind grains of coffee then it’s an interesting experience. The thing that struck my attention was the slug at the bottom and I was told by my friend that you shouldn’t stir it. There’s a tradition where after you finish you let the slug harden and you turn your coffee plate upside down. I guess you then tell your fortune after you pour the slug out. You don’t have to do this but I honestly enjoyed a good buzz from a tiny amount.
