Concept Sketch of a Raspberry Pi Case

Color painting sketch

The Raspberry Pi is just begging for a slick casing, because it seems so naked without one. I thought it would be cool if the logo glowed when you turn it on but it’ll defeat the purpose of being a low cost computer system. You’re allowed to dream, right?

  1. Now that Concept Case Design is Sex—C! ;-) Well done!

The Logo lighting up; is a great idea and maybe not just a dream… ‘The Raspberry LED Logo’ would be a nice bling addition too an already nice looking case design… my guess is: this could be achieved by tapping into the USB header if need be; remember LED is very low power consumption – you could also add a small 2nd level 4port USB adapter into the design as well, as a ‘Model B design higher end concept case’ and a model A as a cheaper standard case without the bling or USB hub addition. As above.

The device certainly needs additional USB connectors for it to be more diverse and user friendly.

I have just ordered the Pre-release of the RaspberryPI board version B.
Is your Case Design above – in Concept only or have you worked out deals to get this design manufactured and released?

I’d be interested in buying one or many more. I ordered the pre-release RaspberryPI so I can work on different uses for the device. As an IT technician I have some great idea’s. And will be looking into this device quite heavily. I think we’re on a winner here, specially with the OS option being Open Source. NIX based. ;-)

Believe or not, it’s something I came up with after viewing the Raspberry PI for hours. I use to do concept sketches for electronic stuff and I just thought the Raspberry PI deserves something slick. Unfortunately, this is purely conceptual and a pipe dream.

I never thought of tapping into the USB for power. They should utilize USB 3 one way or another.

I’m going to wait for the demand to die down so I can actually get one without worrying if one is available or not. Once I get it though, I’m going to see what kind of crap I can do to it. Looking forward to tinkering with it as well.

Thank you for the kind words.

  3. @Thai,

Well you did a great job! ;-)
*Re: Unfortunately, this is purely conceptual and a pipe dream.*
Why not Copyright or Patient the image. Then go to their forums and paste the design link with comment that you created a concept design for their RaspberryPI? blah blah.

Ya never know your luck?! the Dev’s might like what they see and pay you for the design concept ;-)
I’d say this is really going to take off. And so far your design is really slick compared to others ;-)

Re: USB 3 yeah I agree. Im thinking maybe they didn’t do this for cost reasons and also USB has a little higher power consumption. At least the B design now comes with Ethernet port.

It will becoming more powerful over future versions. There’s a lot of talk & action; the more people geek it with this – with feedback from the community; the technology will certainly grow.

Can’t wait to receive my re-order soon. It would be awesome to see the processor more powerful! – and the ram 256mb limit, is a little sucky, though Im still looking forward to playing with mine anyways ;-)

Aw, thanks man. I’m going to see if I can prototype it and take pretty pics of it. I’ll see how that goes and I’m going to try to get it to glow. I think I can give it a shot.

Yea, you’re right, it has to be low power consumption. The thing that got me was it supports OpenGL ES. OpenGL mother..effing ES.

Once I get my hands on one, it’s going to be gadget porn. What I noticed today is that it’s missing a power button.

  5. Yeah – Good on ya, I would do it; at least it might pay off in some way.
I was thinking about the cost associated for the LED logo the other day.

Maybe a bright UV related ink in a Logo sticker would be a cheaper option. lolz.

Re: Open GL etc. ikr ;-)

I noticed the same thing about the power, might have to check the schematics to see where you could add 2pins for power header so this could be used for a simple switch to be added, There are a few spare pins that Im guessing you could pull power from on the board and maybe another option also with the USB cable.

Because the B version has the smallest USB female connector for power – Some electronic supply shops may have a cable that has an additional connected cable or switch method for open/close – on/off connector along with the USB cable. Now that would be an idea. Even if they didn’t have this option available – it’s easy enough to hack one up ourselves.

I have made many USB hacks to add LED + fans etc. with USB as the power source other years and power switches only take a tiny amount of voltage it wouldn’t be hard to do this.

Im sure the dudes at RasberryPI are working on a small Adapter/PSU module – for additional optional accessories to be sold with the RasberryPI. For now – we’ve just got the battery option or the USB.
    :-)

I got a material list going and I will definitely hit up a local electronic shop. It’s been awhile since I last piece a computer together so I think it’ll be a fun thing to do. It might look decent and functionality will be questionable but then again it’s a prototype after all. My fondest memories of screaming at a failed boot up, only to realize after many hours it was a lose cable.

Thank you for the tips! I haven’t played LED ever but I want to give a try. For the glowing logo area, I was thinking that it’s a cut out. I’ll have to play around with stuff. I will hit you up if I get stuck which will more than likely.

I’ll have to dig through through the docs to see what events occur when it powers on. I wish you can add music on start up. I would add gorgorian chanting as it powers on.

  7. LOL. I like the part where you mentioned power up music on start – You’d add the Gorgorian chanting; as it powers on. That made me LMAO; what came to mind at that time was – *Gorgorian theme *The Sound of Silence* haha.

Lets hope when we play with these prototypes – that’s not what we’ll be hearing! haha.
*The Sound of Silence* would be a worry :-| A simple single *beep* would be good! XD

Re: Failed boot – being a lose cable, wow that would have been frustrating. Specially after hours of trouble-shooting only to find it was a lose cable ;-) Im guessing you didn’t decide to sling it by the cable after all that? lol

Re: LED yeah – I enjoy LED mods, take a look at some vid’s on YT – there’s some nice LED tutorial mods out there, i.e: LED Fan for XBOX or PS3 etc… We all know Xbox’s & Playstation’s are lame at keeping cool. So you can hack up a LED FAN to keep them cool and use one of the USB slots for the power source.

I added some YT links below – breaking the YT vid links – I added the space between . com – I wasn’t sure how your WP permissions would be with comment links, So I entered them that way. ENJOY!
    youtube. com/watch?v=jYyYkVlUKq0 <— Wicked XBOX 360 MOD
youtube. com/watch?v=R9HwpKTlzyw <— This is a few awesome mods in one video, this dude is very talented.

When you get to the LED MOD video's above – You can't stop at just these; seeing all in the sidebar.
Some of these Vid's can give you a hint and show you how to grab different power sources for LED etc.

    Ne-ways, I'll leave you with that ;-)

I would like something like this but in white.

I’ll play around and see what it’ll look like. I’m going to create the 3D model in Blender and send it off to a 3D printing service.
