Coffee Cup Artist

Artists have a knack for doing something extraordinary and Boey is no different. His medium is a foam cup and ink. He’s selling these on etsy too. The thing that really got me is he’s using a pointillism style which makes the illustration very compelling to look at. His body of work is nothing short than awesome.

Starbucks New Logo

Starbuck is rebranding themselves again and has streamlined their logo. They’ve basically removed Starbucks from it. Their logo is so iconic that they feel confident enough to remove it entirely. It seriously gave the logo breathing room but it goes against their vintage graphic design.

Beautiful Paintings Made of Coffee

Some people can’t get enough of coffee that they will even go far as using coffee to make paintings with. Angel and Andy have been doing this for a long time. Coffee is pretty hard to paint as a medium but they’ve managed to get a dark tone and they’re keeping it a secret.

HTML5 Generated Art

I just submitted my entries for a HTML5 framework that can do some gnarly things with canvas. It’s called Okapi and they’re doing a contest. First place gets $500 bucks and you don’t have to be a pretentious fecal artist to create it too. Abstract art isn’t so bad when you’re not trying to sell it for a million bucks.

What it’s Like Being a Web Developer

Dev 1:  Hey,  can you rework that XML to JSON but don’t pull it from the SVN. Make sure it’s not HTML 3.0 or XHTML so use HTML5 and it’s W3C compliant.

Dev 2:  No, I’m just gonna combine JS with a little ASP and use WP as the CMS.  It’ll help generate the CSS and CSS3.  I have to install SQL and CGI first.

Dev 1:  WTF,  who uses ASP?  Dude, use PHP with AS3 and don’t mess with the INI file.    I need this ASAP.

Dev 2:  What’s ASAP?

Balls Deep With HTML5 Canvas

The idea of HTML5′s reach across many mobile devices has really got me thinking about mobile games through the browser. While researching I found that Spil Games was offering a monthly HTML5 contest and first place is $5000 bucks. Such a great way to inspire web developers to get their creative juices going. Given that the state of HTML5 is fairly new, there seems to be a lack of resources and libraries. I found canvasdemos.com to be super helpful.

It’s very hard not to compare Actionscript’s mature handling of graphical assets when I was messing with canvas. What HTML5 needs is a robust library to glue everything together. Right now everything seems so scattered and not so refined. But it won’t stop me from investigating the potential of canvas. Check out my demo. It doesn’t have real collision detection yet and this is only a little test on generating objects.

Sweat in a Bottle

I just submitted this bad boy to engrish.com. My wife and I also found another food item labeled “rape blossom” and we cracked up for about 15 minutes but it turns out that it’s actually a real flower of some sort. Go figure.

Coffee vs Beer

It’s the age old question we’ve been asking ourselves the first thing in the AM, “Should I have coffee or beer?”. Both drinks have benefits and it’s no wonder people can’t seem to figure out what they want in the morning. I say go with what your heart tells you.
